NW Academy Puts on High School Musical Inspired by Bosnian War

Students at dress rehearsal

Local arts schools Northwest Academy is putting on a musical this Friday about a Bosnian refuge camp.

Project Theater is presenting Stories from Illyria, a musical love story set in a refuge camp in 1994.

Illyria is an imaginary country resembling the former Yugoslavia. The two main characters, Michael and Sean, are American volunteers who are unable to have children.

The play is based, in part, on the experiences of the school’s arts coordinator, Wade Willis, as a volunteer working in a Croatian refugee camp.

“In the face of incredible loss, the human spirit is awe-inspiring,” Willis said. “Some of the most generous, compassionate, and inspirational people I’ve had the privilege of knowing are the people I met in Croatian refugee camps, who, in spite of their stories of unimaginable hardship, had a sense of perpetual hope. Most of the characters in this musical are based on these real people.”

The lyrics and script to Stories from Illyria were written by local writer Connor Kerns with music by Willis.

Stories from Illyria will be performed Dec. 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 7 and 14 at 2 p.m. at Northwest Academy, 1130 SW Main Street. Adults $12, Students $6, click here for tickets.
