Thanksgiving weekend has traditionally been a time to relax, eat good food, and spend time with loved ones. The weekend has additionally become a fantastic time to support small, local businesses, including bookstores.

This coming Saturday, independent bookstores across the country will be participating in the Indies First Campaign, a grassroots movement originating with acclaimed author Sherman Alexie last fall in 2013. Acting as an extension of Small Business Saturday, indies have invited local authors to visit their favorite independent bookstores and act as booksellers for the day.

Several Portland bookstores will be opening their doors to many of the city's authors, and together they have amassed a veritible treasure trove of authors from whom to ask recommendations. So take some time this weekend to visit any one of these bookstores and support both local businesses and authors.

If you're a fan of young adult literature, Portland authors Ali Berman and Karelia Stetz-Waters will be reading from their YA debuts on Tuesday at Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing. Berman's Misdirected tells the story of a teenage boy moving to a small, conservative Colorado town whose atheism marks him as an outsider while Stetz-Water's Forgive Me I've Told You This Before focuses on a teenage girl coming into her identity as a lesbian in early 90s Oregon amidst the furor of Ballot Measure 9. 7 pm, 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., FREE.

On Saturday, these four Portland bookstores will be participating in the Indies First Campaign as part of Small Business Saturday:

Another Read Through will be hosting literary fiction author Kate Gray and and YA paranormal thriller author Ripley Patton. 3932 N Mississippi Ave. FREE.
