Literopolis: A Weekly Round-up of Portland Literary Events: Dec 15-21

Monday, December 15, 2014

This week, Portland is in for a literary doozy. On Monday, Literary Arts presents The Moth Mainstage, one of the premier radio shows in the country and one of the best examples of live storytelling done brilliantly. Each Moth Mainstage event features five storytellers, luminaries in multiple fields who share their own stories with the audience with the help of The Moth’s directors. This event’s host will be Adam Gopnik, writer and essayist for the New Yorker since 1986. Storytellers will be nonfiction writer Clifton Truman Daniel, singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson, standup-comedian, actor, and writer Taylor Negron, Portland actor Vin Shambry, and professor of English at Concordia University in Portland Ceiridwen Terrill. Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway, 7:30 – 9 pm, $15.

If you’re not able to make it to the Mainstage event on Monday, The Moth will be holding a StorySLAM event the following day on Tuesday at the nightclub Holocene, an open-mic storytelling competition in which 10 competitors are picked from names out of a hat to perform their spoken-word pieces and judged by a handful of selected audience members. Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison St., 7pm doors, 8pm start time, $8-16.

And now for the rest of the week's literary offerings.

Also on Monday, comics creator Richard McGuire will be at Powell’s City of Books talking about his new graphic novel Here, based off his original 6-page comic that was first published in Raw magazine in 1989. The original piece is recognized as one of the most groundbreaking experiments with the formal properties of comics in its exploration of space and time through the use of non-chronological panels and sub-panels. McGuire will be joined in conversation by Karen Russell, writer of magical realism and author of Swamplandia! and Vampires in the Lemon Grove. 1005 W. Burnside St., 7:30 pm, FREE.

For Monday’s last event, local thriller and mystery writer Dana Haynes will be at Another Read Through to read from his new book Gun Metal Heart, the second book concerning the escapades of the Israeli ex-soldier and ex-spy Daria Gibron. N Mississippi Ave., 7-8 pm, FREE.

On Tuesday, Powell’s City of Books will be hosting the second of the company’s Let’s Talk Books events in which the store’s booksellers discuss some of their favorite books this holiday season. 1005 W. Burnside St., 7:30 pm, FREE.

If you were disappointed that you missed your chance to meet Carey Elwes in person a couple weeks ago due to an unfortunate, last-minute cancellation, never fear! His reading and signing for his behind-the-scenes exploration of the making of a classic titled As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of the Princess Bridge has been rescheduled for this Wednesday at Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills. You’re never going to get another opportunity like this one. 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., 7 pm, FREE.

Also on Wednesday, Glyph Café & Art Space presents their monthly Mountain Writers Series. This time they will be joined by local authors Marilyn Stablein, award-winning poet, eco-essayist, and memoirist, and Kate Gray, an award-winning author of chapbooks and poetry whose first novel Carry the Sky was released in September 2014. 804 NW Couch St., 7-9 pm, $5 suggested donation.

On Thursday, In Other Words is hosting both their weekly Progressive Elders Reading Group in which elderly readers are invited to come together to read and discuss books and their monthly Adult Young Adult Book Club. In the latter, fans YA literature get together to read and discuss YA titles through a feminist and queer lens. This month’s title of discussion will be Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.  The book club will also be meeting to vote on 2015’s titles for January through June. 14 NE Killingsworth St., 2-4 pm and 6:30 – 8:30 pm, suggested donation if able.

On Saturday, Another Read Through is bringing 7 local authors of of literary fiction, fantasy, science fiction, romance, mysteries, and children’s chapter books to participate in their Holiday Litera-Cheer event. Leigh Goodison, Christopher Lord, Maggie Jaimeson, Courtney Pierce, Anne Hendren, Joyce Reynolds-Ward, and Susie Slanina will each read a holiday scene from one of their books. 3932 N Mississippi Ave., 1:30 – 3:30 pm, FREE.

Glyph’s weekly Portland Poetry Slam this Sunday draws this week’s Literopolis to a close. 804 NW Couch St., 5-7 pm, $5 donation.
